Long time seen shorebird galore

I have spent a bit more time in the field as usual for the last couple of days. September is no longer an easy month for me but birding somehow sets me free of worries and sadness. The fishponds are a good escape point from daily stupidity. One of the largest ponds are under drainageContinueContinue reading “Long time seen shorebird galore”

Eurasian Oystercatcher arrived by the storm

This afternoon I went out to the fishpods with my local birding buddy and checked the drained pond. Last night we had a powerful but short storm and all night long rain. We hoped to find some nice birds as a result of the storm. We started birdwatching in light pouring rain which stopped duringContinueContinue reading “Eurasian Oystercatcher arrived by the storm”

More mudflats, less shorebirds?

Something wrong is going on here. There are extensive mudflats available at the fishponds but I counted a disappointingly low number of shorebirds this morning. There is fresh mud, dried mud, liquid mud but birds are not present. Migration should be on its peak this time of the year despite today 32˚C (89.6˚F) was measured which is exceptionallyContinueContinue reading “More mudflats, less shorebirds?”

More nesting shorebirds around

May is one of the most interesting month in birding in Hungary. I love to be out and look for nesting birds as well as for rarities. Still most of the days of May I have to spend at home due to my pollen allergy. The strong reactions make birding almost impossible and noisy. HoweverContinueContinue reading “More nesting shorebirds around”

When web images come alive

What a stunning day we had today. 20 days ago we have had almost the same trip to the Kiskunság National Park what we did today. Dani came with me and he also enjoyed the all day outing despite being quite tired by the school.  Early morning found us on the northwest side of theContinueContinue reading “When web images come alive”

Outstanding shorebirding at the Arabian Sea tidal zone

One shorebird species I have been sought after for ages was the Crab Plover. I was told that this unique shorebird would be guaranteed during the excursion to the Marine Reserve National Park, Jamnagar. While the plan was to depart early in the morning some guest complained about too early wake up which resulted aContinueContinue reading “Outstanding shorebirding at the Arabian Sea tidal zone”

Increasing wild geese numbers at the fishponds

Just shortly after midday I drove to the Ferencmajor fishponds to find the last shorebirds in this season. Despite suitable feeding habitats are available just a single overflying Wood Sandpiper was heard and seen. It was quite disappointing but on the other hand it was nice to see the increasing number of wintering geese which groupContinueContinue reading “Increasing wild geese numbers at the fishponds”

Busy times without any birding but great progress with the shorebird project

I have been stucked to my desktop for the last two weeks due the launch of the WorldWaders website. The only outside activity is when we go out with Kea for a short walk and I drink my ‘daily’ ice(cream) coffee at the terrace of Platan Restaurant. This new website and the related organisation willContinueContinue reading “Busy times without any birding but great progress with the shorebird project”

Breeding shorebird survey at the Seewinkel, E Austria

It’s been a while I posted anything in my blog. The main reason was the lack of time due to the launching of my new WorldWaders website. It took all my time from birding and from posting here. As a part of this new project I decided to organise a shorebird birding day and visitedContinueContinue reading “Breeding shorebird survey at the Seewinkel, E Austria”
